Vegas Bound!

As a photographer, it is VERY important for me to keep educated and up to date on all the newest techniques and happenings in photography, and that is why I have made it a priority to attend at least 3 workshops, or educational seminars, each and every year. This year, I will be attending the WPPI Convention in Las Vegas. It's the biggest event in the industry and a photographer's dream to attend.

I can't even tell you all how excited I am to be able to do this. I will be attending workshops by some of the industries leading photographers, and will get to see all the newest gadgets, gizmos and photography related products at the huge exhibition, as well. What an opportunity! I can't wait to sharpen my skills and soak up all the wonderful information I will be learning. Getting to be in warm, sunny Vegas, in a beautiful hotel room, surrounded by industry leaders--- Oh, the things I do for my clients! ;)

Recently, I was challenged by a fellow photographer to get personal with my blog. Show my fans and clients and readers a little bit of who I am. At first, this seemed silly. This is, after all, a photography blog, not my own personal forum. But after some thought, I realized that I am asking people to share their most beautiful, crazy, funny, sweet moments of their lives with ME, so why shouldn’t I do the same? So, I will be sprinkling little bits of my personal life and ponderings throughout this blog, in the hopes that you get to see a glimpse of who I am, and what makes me tick.

With that being said, it’s about to get REALLY personal in here. I wanted to share something that I’ve never talked about. Never wanted to talk about that, frankly, scares the heck out of me. But this year is my No Fear Year. The year where I have, and continue to, face my biggest fears head on with a great big smile, and a hike of my hose ;) I hope you get something from this following post. Writing it, and putting it out there is scary, but here goes nothin’.

Today was a big day for me. It was a day I faced a huge, huge fear of mine. That fear? Being SEEN. I’ve been in hiding for almost 10 years. Why? Because I’m fat. Obese. Big. Chunky. Pick one. They're all words I have used to describe myself, and in fact, they are words I’ve allowed to DEFINE myself for most of my adult life.

I’ve always been a bigger girl, and pretty self conscious about it, but that self consciousness turned to down right embarrassment one night when I got out of my vehicle wearing a pair of capris, that I had to coax myself into wearing, since I hated showing skin, and I had a group of men squeal and oink and yell at me. Yep. They oinked. I cried. It was awful.

The worst part about it? I let it completely kill any confidence and self worth I had. A part of me just died that night. From that moment on, I walked around feeling like an un human ‘thing’ that didn’t even deserve to exist. I stuck to wearing big baggy clothes to hide my rolls, and I worried constantly what others thought of my appearance, to the point that I avoided even going out, for fear that I would run into so and so from high school, or an ex boyfriend, or that some punk kid would try to humiliate me publicly.

That’s when I found photography. Well, it kind of found me. I loved every little thing about it. I dove into it, and eventually turned my passion into Indi*Claire photography. I turned 30 and started to realize that I am MORE than my weight and my appearance. I started to realize that my big heart and my love for other people was so much more valuable than whether I had a tiny butt, or the perfect stomach. These realizations didn’t come easy, or without pain, and very single ONE of my fears (running into the handsome ex, being publicly humiliated etc) ALL came to fruition. Almost all at once, with my biggest fear landing ever so gently on my doorstep about a week ago.

I got an email from a local news station, requesting an on camera interview for a foundation I am part of. GASP! Camera?! TV?! Tens of thousands of viewers?! Bigger GASP! This was it. A swift, hard, FINAL kick from my self made hiding place.

I’m not going to lie. I’ve laid awake almost every night, frozen, and scared, ready to call it all off. I’ve sweated over whether I was ready to be seen, to finally say; "Yup. This is me. Like it or lump it, I don’t CARE! I’m HAPPY with who I am, and how I look!". Ohhh boy, did I sweat, and fret---- but I DID IT! I did it, and it was awesome! A once in a lifetime experience, and I FINALLY didn’t let my fears and my weight hold me back from savouring every last delicious second of it!

I have finally done it. I have finally just LET IT ALL GO! I have stepped out of my fears and into my own skin, and it feels divine. I’m FREE. Delightfully, wonderfully, blissfully, FREE!

My First Tiny Light {Lethbridge Tiny Light Photographer}

Meet Koral. She’s the kind of little girl who dives head first into life. She wastes no opportunity to explore the world around her, or to laugh infectiously. No chair, or hill or rock goes unclimbed while she is around, and she has a giggle that could melt the heart of a snowman.

In April, Koral will celebrate her 3rd birthday. A milestone her parents were once afraid she would never see.

When Koral was born, her parents noticed her skin and eyes getting more yellow, and knew that something was wrong. They were told that their daughter simply was jaundiced. Thankfully, Korals mom, Keri, followed her gut instinct and sought out a second opinion, and Koral was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia. A disease in which the child is born with little or no bile ducts, causing the liver not to drain bile properly. This disease can be detected by a Total Biliary Rubin test, that unfortunately, most parents aren’t aware of, and at the time, was not a mandatory test for jaundiced babies.

Koral immediately underwent a Kasai surgery, in which the small intestines are attached to the liver, in an effort to help the liver drain the excess bile. Unfortunately, little Korals tiny liver had suffered too much damage and she was in desperate need of a new one.

Her parents, Keri and Darrin, remember watching their tiny baby get worse and worse, as they felt helpless, wondering if she would ever get her much needed liver transplant. Miraculously,
on February 5th, 2009, Koral received that gift, and it came right from her own mother. Both Koral and her mommy pulled through surgery and within a day Koral’s yellow colouring started to disappear, and by weeks end, she was able to sit up and play and was her glowing, energetic little self.

Koral will need the assistance of several medications, for the rest of her life, and requires monthly blood tests and monitoring. She may end up needing yet another liver transplant, and because of her meds, may eventually need a kidney transplant, as well. But despite all of this, her parents are optimistic about the bright and shining future of their little star, and according to her mom, “She is an angel and a blessing to us every day, and we don’t take a day for granted! I may have given her part of my liver, but she gave me all of her heart and all her trust for her to grow from a Tiny Light to a glowing star.”

My Little Dreamer {Lethbridge Kids Photographer}

Crowded somewhere between the breakfast mess, the dryer breaking down and the case of the mysterious crayon markings all over the walls, this refreshingly beautiful and simply perfect little moment happened.

My daughter grabbed her 'Ufelaaylee' {which she has globbed poster paint all over because it was "too borin' and not pretty enough"} and decide to write a song. Sitting in the sunlight she sang the sweetest, most simple little song. It is moments like these that make all the other crazy moments in a mommy's day melt away, and you're reminded of the good stuff. I hope you all are blessed with a perfect moment like this in your day today, and every day.

Why Custom Photography?

It has come up in several conversations with fellow photographers that one of the top questions asked by potential clients is, "Why should we chose you, who charges 100+ dollars for a session, instead of going to Wal-Mart (or Superstore, or Sears etc) and paying $50 bucks?".

WHY CUSTOM PHOTOGRAPHY?
Custom photography is more of a luxury than your entry level cookie cutter chain experience. Custom photography truly is not for everyone, it requires a level of commitment, investment in time and money, forethought and planning on the part of the subject/client and requires a larger time commitment for the photographer as well.

Clients who enjoy taking a more active role in the creation of their families’ memories have the desire to have portrait art that is truly personalized. These more discerning clients have been known to budget and allot time for a custom photography session. Many clients opt for it to be a once a year special experience, some opt to have custom photography sessions done to record their child's stages in life. Having said this, it is clear that custom photography is not in everyone’s budget, it is something that most families save for to splurge on from time to time to memorialize their children as they really are (not posed and primped in the cookie cutter studio setting).

There is a great deal of time involved in creating high end custom photography sessions for a client. The luxury of great service, better choices and a supberb end product. The result of all this are heirloom quality images. The time invested at the session is only a small portion of time involved in this process.

Custom photography has been likened to purchasing a fine vehicle. To get to point B from A let's face it, even a bus ride would suffice. If you want to luxuriate in a finely appointed vehicle, customizing your own experience by listening to smooth jazz while sitting in a climate controlled setting adjusted purely for your comfort in a body hugging leather interior, perhaps that Lexus you so desire is your cup of tea. Custom photography is much the same cup of tea. It is the Lexus of the photography world. It is where the intangibles make the experience truly wonderful and the images themselves make the investment of money and time truly worthwhile.

Custom photography can be broken down into even more levels. There are on location, studio, mixed studio/on location, specialty location and destination type photographers. The beauty of custom photography is in the choices and in the luxury of these options. The customized service level you are sure to experience will be amazing. The knowledge that your final images are the result of someone caring about those moments so much that they take extra time ensuring that the artwork you receive is good enough to stand by with their name on it. That level of quality and commitment is all but lost in the age of "mass produced," "mass marketed," corporate "everyone is a number". Custom photography is based on being unique to you. How great an experience would be, to be able to sit back and allow a photographer to do this highly custom work for images that you will most likely cherish for a lifetime?

Keep in mind more than anything that the Lexus will never appreciate in value the way your portraits will. The portrait art you become invested in from your custom photographer will no doubt increase in value and become more priceless as the years pass.

I am so excited this year to roll out some of the new products Indi*Claire photography will be offering to my clients. So how cute is this family? This little girl had SUCH personality! I could have stayed and taken pictures of her all day. The love between this family was so apparent & endearing . Use a regular-sized shoe box or pliable plastic box. If wrapping your shoe box, please wrap the lid separately.

Boy or Girl?

Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14.
Select a Shoe box
Fill your shoe box

Fill your shoe box with a well-balanced variety of items from the following categories:

* School Supplies - Items such as pencils, pens, pencil crayons, note pads, and picture books
* Toys & Other Gifts - Items such as stuffed animals, small musical instruments, hair clips, toy jewelry, t-shirts, socks, and candy (loose, individually wrapped hard candy in a sealable bag)
* Hygiene Items - Please place soap in a sealable bag
* Personal Note - Include a personal note and/or a photo in your shoe box (not inside the donation envelope)

DO NOT INCLUDE:

* Toothpaste (due to customs regulations)
* Food and any chewy, crumbly, or soft candy: Including gum (due to customs regulations)

I'm sitting here in my warm, cozy house, on this crisp fall morning with my two beautiful kids, and can't help but feel overwhelmingly lucky. We have SO much! My kids never go hungry, sleep in soft, snuggley beds, and at Christmas time, they're completely spoiled by their gramma's and grampas and aunties and uncles.

However, there are little ones all over the world who aren't as fortunate, and that is something my husband and I have worked really hard to make our kids aware of and compassionate towards. We've always tried to instill a greater sense of humanity and compassion in our kids, and do volunteering and giving activities with them, regularly, and they really enjoy it. So this Christmas, one of the things we are taking part in, is the Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child. Basically, you fill a shoebox with little items like crayons and stickers and toys for a little girl or boy, and the Samaritan's Purse distributes them to some of the neediest places on earth. For some of these kids, it's the first gift they've ever received!

So, we would like to encourage everyone out there to take part in this awesome, and SIMPLE way of giving, and to encourage this, Indi*Claire photography will be offering the Give a Shoebox, Get a Portrait Campaign for 1 week, only (October 31-November7).

For a minimum donation of 2 filled shoe boxes (see http://samaritanspurse.ca for details and suggested items) you will receive;

20 minute mini session and 3 high resolution images on a disc.

The more shoe boxes you donate, the longer your session, and the more images you will receive.

4-5 Filled Shoe boxes~ 1/2 hour session, and 5 images.

Kylee came into our lives when she was 14 and is still a very special part of our hearts and family, today. So when she asked me to take some portraits of her and her Adam, I was more than delighted to do so. Isn't there just something about new love? The sweet stolen glances, the heart racing, palm sweating excitement of it all? Well, you could definitely see it with these two. Boudoir style photography has always been something I've wanted to try and thanks to a few of my super hot mommy friends, I had the chance to this last week. I must say it is such a blast! There is something so amazing about watching these moms blossom into these sexy, vibrant amazing beauties in front of my lens. The reactions when they saw their pictures was even more wonderful. Each woman shared with me how the experience made them FEEL beautiful, and confident and sexy and that this experience changed something inside of them. One friend even said "Now whenever I have a bad day, or don't feel 'pretty', I'm just going to go back and look at these pictures". Wow. What a feeling to know that I was a little part of that! Thank you so much ladies, for allowing me to practice and fumble and make a fool of myself trying to light and set up each shot. You are all beautiful inside and out, thank you for sharing that beauty!!!

Help Portrait~

I still remember the day I decided that I truly wanted to become a photographer. It was a day that really shaped who I wanted to be as a professional photographer, and business person. I've always loved taking pictures, and that love really grew into an obsession once my daughter was born, but it became much more than that, the day that K. walked into my life.

K. was our first teenaged foster child. She came into our home, shy and unsure of herself, with long bangs that covered her big, wide eyes. She never made eye contact, hung her head, and rarely spoke above a whisper. I knew there was a bubbly, creative teenager hiding underneath that layer of sadness and insecurity, so one day I told her to hop in the car with me. I took her to the coolest salon in town and got her hair cut, then got her make up professionally done and bought her some new clothes, brought her home and took some pictures of her. Let me tell you, the shy, insecure, little girl walked out of that salon a completely different person. She held her head a little higher, looked at me when she spoke and, gasp, even smiled and giggled. She got brighter and brighter and happier and happier as the day went on, and once we got home and did her pictures, I was looking at a completely different kid.

She's now been a part of our family for 4 years, and gave me an experience I'll never forget, and helped shape my path as a photographer. From then on, I KNEW I didn't just want to take peoples pictures, I wanted to make people FEEL beautiful, capture their tender moments shared with their children, give them confidence, make them feel sexy, beautiful, happy, uninhibited. I also wanted to use my talents for those who deserved it but maybe could not afford such luxuries as a personal photo shoot. So I have made a point to do this, and I have been looking for an organization who had the same ideals and desire. I found it in HELP PORTRAIT.

It's this world wide movement of photographers, volunteers and others getting together to give back to those less fortunate, and bring a little sunshine into their day by offering their services and talent. I have joined Help Portrait and would like to bring this movement to Lethbridge and area. So if you know a family or group of deserving people, please contact me, and if you are a photographer... budding, hobbyist, amateur or professional, JOIN HELP PORTRAIT and lets make this happen!!!

I had the pleasure of doing a session with this crazy cute couple last week, and just wanted to share the really beautiful testimonial they sent. Thanks so much to you both! I'm truly humbled by your sweet words, and absolutely, we'll see you-same time next year! ;)

We just had our pictures done by Sam and it was an awesome experience! She was professional, fun, flexible and is very easy going. If you have something in mind, don't be afraid to ask her. She open to suggestions and she has great ideas of her own.

We come from Calgary and we had our pictures taken in Lethbridge. We had no idea where to have the pictures taken but she knew of all the best places to go. With Rustic places, great landscaped backgrounds and even a cupcake shop, she was very comfortable in any element.

The photos that she took of us are amazing. So many different poses and angles. She always gets the best shots and makes you so relaxed while doing them.

The communication and the follow up afterward, is the best. She gets the pictures online within the next couple of days and has a variety of pictures that you can view and order. She also makes sure that you are happy with them, which we really are.

Her pricing is also reasonable for the amount of time and effort that she puts into the photos and the albums.

Would I have her do our pictures again in a year or so? Of course.

So Sam, same time next year?

What a great job I have!! I get to meet so many wonderful, interesting, beautiful people and families. I feel so honoured to get to have a little glimpse into their lives and personalities, and witness love at it's best. I met several awesome families, and individuals and couples during Indi*Claire's fundraiser for Haiti. It was an extremely windy, windy southern Alberta day, so unfortunately, we were VERY limited with locations in which to 'shoot' within the Galt Museum. Regardless, it turned out to be a great day, and I think we were able to get some beautiful portraits of some very beautiful people, while helping raise funds for relief for Haiti

This mommy and her adorable little girls were so much fun. I think we may have a future model on our hands! I got sooo many great pictures, it was hard to chose just a few for the sneak peak.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL COUPLE, AND SO FUN! IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT, THIS MOMMA TO BE IS ONLY ABOUT 2 WEEKS AWAY FROM HER DUE DATE!!! SHE LOOKS AMAZING!!!

We all know the devastation suffered by the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, and if you're like me, you've been watching the horrible stories of suffering, pain and destruction unfold before your eyes and wondered, what can I do to help?

Well, ask no more. Here is your chance. Indi*Claire Photography will be holding a full day of 1/2 hour mini sessions on March 27, 2010 and all proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross to go towards relief aid in Haiti. It's that simple. Smile for the camera, walk away with beautiful images, and the joy of knowing you made a difference in the world.

So please open your hearts and join Indi*Claire photography raise funds for the people of Haiti.

Details are still being worked out, but please, invite all of your friends, send everyone this link. THE DETAILS

Indi*Claire photography is asking for a minimum donation of $50 in return for a 20 minute photography session and 4 artistically enhanced images on CD. Those who donate $200 or more will receive a disc of at least 10 fully enhanced images. Donate $500 or more and in addition to the disc from your mini session, you will receive a free 2 hour portrait session and several prints courtesy Indi*Claire photography.

*****There will only be a certain amount of spots available so please check off that you are attending and leave a comment saying that yes, you would like to have spot saved for that day, and if you want, you can also tell us what 'donation' to the Red Cross you will make. You must secure your spot with at least $50. This is to prevent people from saying they will come, and not showing. Payments can be made by cash only and a receipt (for tax purposes if you chose) will be provided.

Such a beautiful mommy daughter pair! It was so much fun capturing these two in their quiet, fun and sweet little moments. Mommy R. is a breastfeeding advocate, and had a special request that I try to capture that beautiful moment between her and her little one.

This was one of the funnest and sweetest little families I've ever met. We had an absolute blast during this session. They were such naturals, and really made my job easy! Afterwords I got a huge compliment from Kristy when she said that they enjoyed the shoot so much they forgot they were being photographed! That is EXACTLY what I like to hear. My goal is to make people feel comfortable, and have a good time, and I'm really not into the whole posing thing. I like to capture moments between people, to me, it's more authentic.

Anna was one of the first people to allow me the pleasure to practice my photographic skills on her. Our first photo shoot was when she only a few months along with her tiny pink princess, Paisley. I have been honoured to get to follow this little family and watch them grow.
